February 5, 2015

CAB and KMST members / staff present:

Kim Hass, Stevie Kearse, Lynn Wilson, Angie Rolufs, John Francis, and Jim Graham,

Order of Business:

KMST Underwriting Coordinator Jim Graham gave a progress report on Joel Goodridge and his knee surgery.

General Manager John Francis gave an update on the open Program Director’s position at KMST.  The search committee has been chosen, the position is now closed, and three candidates will be interviewed.  Francis did not disclose the names of the interviewees, other than to say that KC Frahm was among them.

Francis gave an update on the recent transmitter outages.  Chief Engineer Mark Rogers spent the better part of the last two days at the transmitter site, supervising the installation of a new beacon at the top of the tower.  This was being installed to replace the old one, which was damaged by a gunshot.  The transmitter must be turned off when someone is climbing the tower.

Francis explained the Quarterly Issues report, which is part of the station’s Public Inspection File.  He enlisted the help of the CAB in identifying issues of interest to the community for the station to cover in future reports.  The CAB was forthcoming with many issues of importance, including:

  • The Rolla parks department sales tax
  • Hwy 63 corridor improvements
  • Early Education programs at Rolla Public Schools
  • Health care issues regarding the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid
  • Student drinking at St. Pats
  • Rolla West development
  • Ft. Leonard Wood issues

Francis presented the generalized current local news content on KMST, and asked the CAB if, in their opinion, it was meeting the needs of the community for local news.  They had several suggestions for interesting news stories they would like to see covered, such as

  • Interesting research going on at S&T
  • See if the two new Deans would be interested in regular features on research in their departments
  • Area wineries and breweries
  • Area festivals
  • Robotics competitions
  • Tech 44 (Lonna Sowers)
  • Area economic development

Francis passed out a list of the current KMST underwriters, and displayed a brief slide show of NPR listener demographics, as measured in 2013 and publicized by NPR.  The CAB discussed potential underwriting business opportunities that matched up with NPR listener demographics.  This was very valuable information for Underwriting Coordinator Jim Graham.
